What is Human Design?

Human Design is a unique approach to self-discovery and personal growth that combines several ancient and modern systems of knowledge. It aims to help people uncover their authentic selves by de-conditioning the pieces of you that you were told you couldn’t be as a child, and reveal who you truly are.

Human Design is simply an experiment. It combines elements from various traditions and systems, including astrology, the I Ching, the Kabbalah, and the chakra system, along with concepts from genetics and quantum physics to create a comprehensive framework for understanding human behavior and personality. You can think of it as “the ultimate personality test”!

It doesn’t require you to believe in anything and can be a compliment to any existing faith. (See my post on Faith and Human Design).

I’ll break down each of those systems here:

Kabbalah - this is a tradition within Judaism that seeks to understand the essence of God and the divine workings of the universe. It contributes to Human Design through its Tree of Life, which symbolizes the divine structure of the universe. It expresses an intimate connection between the Creator and creation, viewing them as interconnected rather than separate and guides people to a union with God. This tradition connects to people like Abraham, Moses, and Jesus. The nine centers of the bodygraph correspond to the nine lower sephiroth of the Tree of Life, each representing specific qualities of life energy that influence our experiences and expressions.

Chinese I-Ching or "Book of Changes" - this is an ancient wisdom book filled with 64 different life lessons or situations. Each of these lessons is represented by a special symbol called a hexagram. In Human Design, each of the gates on your body map is connected to one of the 64 lessons from the I Ching. It's like having a personal guidebook for life, where each part of you is linked to a specific piece of wisdom. These lessons cover all sorts of life situations, from how to start new projects to dealing with challenges or making important choices. When you learn about which gates are active in your Human Design, it can help you understand yourself better, make decisions that feel right, and grow as a person in ways that suit your unique nature.

Astrology - this system is based on way the planets orbit each other and their effects. Just like the moon affects the tides and the water on the earth, the other planets do as well. Astrological beliefs suggest that different planets are associated with specific energetic and personality traits that are imprinted on a person based on the day, time, and place of birth. Human Design not only shows these traits at the time of birth - the conscious side and the mind of a person, but also 88 days prior, giving an unconscious side of a person, which is associated with the body and allows the

Chakra System - the chakra system is based on the seven main chakras that run directly in the middle of your body. They are “spinning wheels” of energy and govern different organs and emotions. When out of alignment, your chakras create imbalances in your body leading to emotional distress and/or dis-ease. Prayer, breath work, exercise, and meditation are a few ways to balance out the chakras in your body.

Quantum Physics - uses these concepts to explain the framework for understanding human nature and behavior. Neutrinos, subatomic particles studied in quantum physics, carry information that imprints individuals at birth, forming the basis of their unique design. Human Design also draws parallels between quantum mechanics principles, such as wave-particle duality, and human characteristics, suggesting that people exhibit both wave-like and particle-like behaviors. Additionally, the system proposes that energy centers and channels in the bodygraph resonate with the quantum field, connecting individuals to universal energy patterns that influence their behavior and life path. These connections offer a perspective for self-exploration and personal growth.

As for the origin of Human Design, it was created by Alan Robert Krakower, who later adopted the name Ra Uru Hu. In January 1987, while living on the island of Ibiza, Spain, Krakower claimed to have had a mystical experience where he encountered what he called "the Voice." For eight days and nights, he reportedly received a transmission of information that became the foundation of the Human Design System.

He spent the next 25 years developing and teaching Human Design around the world, which gained popularity as a tool for self-discovery and personal development. He established the International Human Design School and created a certification program for practitioners. He continued to expand on the system until his death in 2011, leaving behind a legacy of books, lectures, and a growing community of people curious about Human Design.

These systems of Human Design deepen our understanding of ourselves and our interactions with the world, creating more flow and ease in our lives. Human Design encourages experimentation and personal exploration rather than blind acceptance. It serves as a tool for self-reflection and growth, allowing people to complement their existing beliefs and practices with its insights. It can be a powerful tool for growth and relationships!
